Extending Genet Mariam School to Grade six (2020-2021)

The Genanaw Foundation’s first project during the COVID-19 pandemic was to build a school extension to grade 6, which was requested by school administrators and representatives from an underserved and impoverished community. The foundation built the school as per the community’s request and handed it over to them. This initiative has helped the underprivileged children in the community as they no longer have to cover a distance of over 10 miles on foot to reach the nearest school. This was particularly beneficial for those children who could not handle such a strenuous commute, which could have resulted in them quitting school.

Some children attending Genet Mariam Primary School come from neighboring communities and have to cover a distance of 5 to 10 miles daily on foot to attend school. The foundation aims to build schools in these communities with the help of donors like you. Your participation in this endeavor to support us will help these children avoid the daily commute and encourage them to attend school regularly.

These are the various stages of building the extension up to grade 6.

Extending Genet Mariam School to Grade 8 (2023-2024)

The Genet Mariam School has initiated an extension construction project, encompassing classrooms for grades 7 and 8, a headmaster’s office, a staff room, a storage/archive room, and contemporary restrooms for both staff and students. The primary objective is to establish a junior high school within the community, which will benefit children from neighboring areas by reducing their travel distance and time for their junior high education by almost half. Upon completion, the new junior high school will be handed over to the community and the Education Bureau of Kistane Gurage District, also known as Sodo Gurage.

A foundation stone-laying ceremony was held to mark the beginning of the construction. The proposed extension is a significant development for the school, as it will provide a comprehensive educational experience to its students. Establishing a junior high school within the community will ensure that children have access to quality education close to home without the need for long commutes.

In conclusion, the Genet Mariam School’s expansion project is a significant step towards fulfilling the community’s educational needs. The project’s success will benefit the students and contribute to the community’s overall development.

Providing Electricity to the Genet Mariam School and Community (2023-2024)

The foundation has successfully procured a power transmission transformer, thus enabling the school and community to access electricity for the first time. This development has paved the way for the children at the Genet Mariam School to be introduced to information technology. Before this, access to computers and a reliable power supply was unfeasible. With electricity now available, teachers can use computers as an effective tool for teaching. Moreover, the organization has acquired two 1500-gallon water storage tanks filled with clean underground well water using electric-driven motor pumps. An International NGO drilled and installed the well and pipelines required to reach the community.
Regrettably, several communities, including Fule Ammanuel, Gereno Betet Wonz, Amoute Morege, Gereno Enset Tekil, Wudgetna Gefersa, Wacho Morege, and Adazer, in the Kistane Gurage District currently lack access to electricity. This has resulted in their schools and homes being unable to function efficiently. Our organization aims to support these communities by providing power transmission transformers. However, we do not possess the necessary resources to support all the communities at once, so we have decided to help one community at a time, beginning with the most vulnerable.
We would appreciate any assistance that you could offer. Your contribution could make a significant difference in the lives of these communities. If you wish to support our cause, please click the link below.
