Providing learning materials for the GMS children in 2022 and 2023.

The families of students residing in the Genet Mariam community and surrounding areas faced financial constraints that made it difficult for them to purchase the necessary school supplies. In response to this issue, the Genanaw Foundation initiated a program to provide school essentials such as exercise books, pens, pencils, lunch bags, and backpacks for the past two academic years. Collaborating closely with school administrators, we obtained accurate counts of the required materials per grade, and we subsequently procured and transported the supplies to the students.

In addition, we provided the teachers with the necessary tools and equipment to enhance their teaching capabilities. Thanks to this initiative, students can now attend school without the worry of missing out on education, and parents no longer have to choose between their children due to financial constraints.

We acknowledge that neighboring communities face similar challenges, and we intend to extend our support to these communities to ensure that no student is left behind.

Protective dignity kits for the girls at Genet Mariam School

The lack of access to feminine hygiene protective kits among parents is causing young girls to miss classes during their menstrual cycles. This predicament often leaves these girls feeling vulnerable to societal pressures and judgmental attitudes due to their lack of access to proper protective gear. Upon a visit to the Genet Mariam School, concerned mothers and female teachers raised the issue with our personnel. The Kistane (a.k.a. Sodo) District Bureau of Education provided us with the number of girls requiring assistance. Our foundation then contacted the Days for Girls International East African coordinator and obtained fifty reusable and eco-friendly dignity kits. These kits were then donated to the girls at the Genet Mariam School. However, with over 1850 girls requiring protective equipment, significant gaps in the provision of these materials persist. Consequently, we have made plans to provide these reusable protective gears to the girls for the next school year, and we are confident that this objective can be accomplished with your unwavering support.

Uniforms for the students of Genet Mariam School

The students at Genet Mariam School, drawn from underprivileged backgrounds, are often seen wearing ragged clothes and unsuitable footwear or cannot afford any at all. Our website features images that unambiguously illustrate the challenges these students face. Unfortunately, the district government does not provide sufficient funds to support these marginalized communities, and families, constrained by poverty, cannot afford to purchase proper clothing and footwear.

Notwithstanding these challenges, our organization is committed to positively impacting these students’ lives. With your support, we are resolute in improving their situation.

Providing students with lunch meals that are easy to prepare

In the Kistane (a.k.a. Sodo) District, located in Gurage Zone, Ethiopia, many children attending the Genet Mariam School go without food during lunchtime. This is a heart-wrenching reality due to poverty within their households. Their parents are busy with daily life activities, such as going to the market to put dinner on the table or working to earn some money due to their dependence on primitive farming. Sadly, this recurring cycle of childhood hunger is a common yet untold story in communities across Ethiopia. However, we can make a difference. We can provide these children with essential resources to facilitate their current educational experience and ensure they receive the nutrition they need. This is a costly yet necessary undertaking that requires the ongoing commitment of the Genanaw Foundation and support from others. Together, we can break the cycle of hunger and give these children the chance they need to thrive. The organization plans to provide children with easy-to-prepare lunch ingredients, including pasta, rice, macaroni, tomato sauce, and canned beans, so they can cook and bring ready-to-eat meals to school.
